ASF20: The science and art behind baking

Attention! Long instructions ahead so please take time to read every point carefully before you sign up!

INSTRUCTIONS:

Please ensure that you have the following equipment/utensils before you sign up for this STEAMinar:

  1. Oven for baking (convection oven or countertop oven, make sure it can fit a 20.5 x 20.5 x 5xm tray).

  2. Stand mixer or handheld mixer for beating the egg and sugar. (if not you can train your arm muscle)

  3. Kitchen hob for melting the butter.

  4. One small or medium-sized cooking pot for melting the butter.

  5. One medium-sized stainless steel mixing bowl that can withstand the heat from the melted butter.

  6. One large mixing bowl (which you can beat the eggs without spilling).

  7. Oven gloves or pot holders to handle hot tray from the oven.

You are required to prepare the following items for the hands-on baking [B] and decorating [D] segments:

  1. Two large eggs (each weighing about 60-65g) at room temperature. [B]

  2. 113g of unsalted butter [B]

  3. 1/2 teaspoon of salt. [B]

  4. One dessert/flat/fruit knife for chopping nuts. [D]

You will be provided with the following items for the hands-on baking segment:

  1. Baking chocolate.

  2. Brown sugar.

  3. Granulated sugar.

  4. Vanilla extract.

  5. All-purpose flour.

  6. Dutch-processed dark cocoa powder.

  7. Bittersweet chocolate chips.

  8. Aluminum Tray 20.5 x 20.5 x 5cm

  9. Whisk*

  10. Silicone spatula*

You will be provided with the following items for the hands-on decorating segment:

  1. Assorted nuts (pistachio and hazelnut)

  2. Mini squeeze bottle with chocolate syrup/caramel sauce

  3. Biscoff crumble

  4. Sprinkles

You may wish to prepare the following optional items for the hands-on baking [B] and decorating [D] segments. Don’t worry if you don’t have them:

  1. 1/2 teaspoon of Nespresso powder for the brownie. (we can omit this, the brownie will still be yummy) [B]

  2. Mini marshmallows or M&M chocolates to decorate the brownies. [D]

Other instructions:

  1. All the ingredients used are halal certified.

  2. If this STEAMinar is your second workshop during ArtScience Festival, you have to prepare all the items and arrange them neatly on your working/kitchen table during the 30-minute break from 10:30 to 11:00am.

  3. Please ensure that your eggs are at room temperature before the start of the STEAMinar.

  4. We need you to return the items with * (whisks and spatulas) when you return to school after ArtScience Festival. Thank you for your understanding!
