Anderson Serangoon JC celebrates interdisciplinary learning and the fusion of Arts and Sciences in our unique and meaningful way. For one day, we leave our classrooms and enter the virtual classrooms that provide an immersive experience for our participants to learn concepts or real-world issues through the Arts Science synergy. We hope to build a learning community among staff and students that promotes interdisciplinary and collaborative learning.

Join us in this fascinating and exciting world of interdisciplinary learning with the fusion of the Arts and Sciences, through our specially curated STEAMinars or STEAM seminars by ASR teachers and students, and external organisations! Please read the specific pre-requisites of the STEAMinars by clicking on ‘STEAM It’ at the end of each STEAMinar introduction, so that you can fully enjoy the experience at home.

Through both scientific and artistic lenses, this hands-on experiential workshop introduces participants to the thrilling and volatile Web3 universe, a place where 'be scammed and be spammed' is a potential daily hazard, but also an arena filled with unparalleled opportunities. Here, 'Huat BIG BIG or lose it all!' is not just a catchphrase, but a reality in an ecosystem brimming with high risks, high rewards, rug pulls and falling knives. Dive into the world of meme coins, where fortunes can skyrocket overnight on the wings of Internet hype. Discover the allure and caution behind airdrops, where free tokens might offer unexpected windfalls or unforeseen consequences. Amidst this whirlwind of excitement, learn how to maintain custody, security and privacy of your own data and assets as well as modern digital and financial literacies, vital skills in this present era. ASF02: Crystal Reverie: Evoking Beauty through the Science of Salt Art

Did you know that salt, typically used as a seasoning, has the potential to create stunning works of art? Yes, it’s true— salt! This lesson delves into the synthesis of art and science, exploring the transformative process of creating intricate artworks using salt crystals and unveiling the aesthetic possibilities inherent in salt formations, with a splash of colours. This involves using crystallised salt and your imagination to create a masterpiece! Our exploration extends beyond the canvas as we unravel the chemistry behind salt art, offering a unique opportunity to apply this knowledge in the creation of your very own salt-based artwork. Get ready to embark on a journey where the crystalline wonders of salt become a canvas for the artistic expression of both the mind and the natural world.

ASF03: Flexagon: Designing and Making a Geometric Toy

Join us for an interactive workshop, as we "flex" our knowledge and skills in design and mathematics to make a Flexagon, which can be played as a fidget toy. Back in 1939, a British student in Princeton, Arthur Stone, found that his new American paper would not fit in his English binder so he cut off the ends of the paper and began folding them into different shapes, and created the first Flexagon. A Flexagon looks like an ordinary paper hexagon with a front and back, but hidden inside is a third side that can be brought to the outside by flexing the paper.

ASF04: The Art and Science of Being Wrong: Looking at Science from a Human Angle

Carl Sagan once quipped that "[s]cience is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge." But what exactly is the scientific method, and how is it different from other modes of gaining knowledge? Is the scientific approach adequate to help us fully understand the world around us, or do we need to tap on the arts and humanities to get a fuller picture of reality? And what happens when scientific discovery is unfettered by philosophical and ethical concerns? Join us to find out the answers to these questions and more...

ASF05: DIY Electroluminescent Display using One Line Drawing

Have you ever heard of the term 'Electroluminescent (EL) light' and wonder how it is different from fluorescent light and LED light? What is 'one line drawing' and what makes it unique? Join us to learn how an EL light works and have an opportunity to create your own DIY EL display using the technique of one line drawing.

ASF06: Dalgona Candy

Have you ever dreamt about making your very own delicious Dalgona Candy from the hugely successful hit show “Squid Game”? While it looks daunting and difficult to make, we can create Dalgona candy with simple materials and SCIENCE! This lesson helps us apply the chemical equations we’re so used to seeing and writing on our worksheets and exams. But this time, instead of making us feel stressed, we flip it around and create DESSERTS! We will also learn in depth the genius way of how Seong Gihun (main character of Squid Games) used his saliva to soften the candy, and managed to carve out the shape of his candy. You will also be able to create your own uniquely shaped moulds to create unique shapes on your candy. We also challenge you to successfully carve out your shapes without breaking your Dalgona candy.

ASF07: Cells as Inspiration for Abstract Art

“Is abstract art really ‘art’ at all?” Possibly you think you have to master realism before you can work abstractly? Don't worry, no one checks your “artistic license” credentials at our door. This lesson introduces abstract art, biology basics through cells, and literature through the discussion of the book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, in a discussion of HeLa cells. Let's learn about different types of cells and discuss how cells can reflect art through line, shape, color, and form. We will create an abstract work of art based on an image of a cell and participate in an in-progress critique of our artworks.

ASF08: Creating Simple Games with Construct 3

Ever wondered how games are created? Join us to create your very own clicker and obstacle games! This workshop is perfect for anyone interested in game development. Participants will dive into hands-on sessions where they'll learn how to build a simple clicker game, where players can accumulate points by clicking on objects or characters on the screen. Next, the focus shifts to creating an obstacle game, where participants will learn how to design levels, implement player controls, and incorporate obstacles. Through step-by-step guidance, participants will create 2 simple games before exploring the platform to create your own game. Throughout the workshop, participants can follow the facilitators guide while infusing their own creativity into the development of the two games. By customizing sprites, backgrounds, and items, participants can breathe life into their fantasies, shaping the game aesthetics to reflect their unique vision and style.

ASF09: Understanding Financial Instruments and Investments

An important part of 'adulting' is learning to manage your money. Beyond the basics of learning to save, this also involves learning how to best make your money work for you. In this workshop, we will guide the participants through an introduction to various financial instruments and assets. They will learn to use mathematical models in conjunction with economic reasoning to determine the value of these assets, how the prices of such assets are determined and how to forecast their future value. Students will also go through an interactive online game that allows them to practice some investment strategies in a simulated marketplace.

ASF10: Animating Consciousness: Exploring lucid dreamscapes through Stop Motion

Making dreamlike situations into stop motion animation. Each and everyone, with the materials provided, will make a story out of their dream/ what they can recollect from their dream or can be any story they want to animate). Using materials like paper, straws, cardboard, clay etc, students will get to make figurines, backgrounds of their stories and take pictures using their handphones/ learning devices and collate all the pictures and make it into an animation using the application, Stop Motion Studio.

ASF11: Art and Materials Science

NTU's School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) invites you to a talk on how materials play a pivotal role in art expression, where selection, manipulation and combination of materials cleverly convey the artist’s ideas. Play Materials Escapade: A Puzzle Room Game. Open the doors to the exciting world of Materials Engineering! In this fun and challenging activity, learn about materials science concepts and how materials matter in the development of latest advancements in various industry sectors, from medicine to electronics. MSE’s hallways, labs and hang-out places are transformed into a labyrinth of games and trivia!

ASF12: The Hospital Patient Flow Game

The Hospital Patient Flow Game is a flow analysis game in which you must pick up patients and move them through a hospital from one treatment area to the next until they are finally discharged. Whoever moves the required number of patients through the hospital fastest wins. It sounds simple but it is a fast-paced game and there are tricks to saving time. But it is also an educational game: you will learn a fundamental concept of analysing flow in engineering systems: the so-called “Little’s Law.” So come take a first step into engineering systems analysis and have fun doing it. This workshop is recommended for students with interests in STEM.

ASF13: A Novice’s Guide to Topographic Maps - From 2D to 3D

From the earliest known maps which charted the stars to easily-accessible modern maps accessible by a click on the Google Maps app - maps have always been a projection of our desire to navigate the world. But we still struggle to read and use maps even after all this time. If you are interested in maps, or perhaps you just cannot understand how to read a map, join us in this workshop to see the world in a new way – through the eyes of a mapmaker! We will learn about the ‘science’ behind transposing our 3D Earth onto a 2D surface, and the ‘art’ of mapmaking in re-constructing reality as we know it. We will also get the opportunity to create simple 3D models from 2D maps!

ASF14: Watercolours Painting with Geometry

Dive into the world of Watercolours Painting with Artist Cheryl T. In this Watercolours Painting Workshop, experience the fusion between Geometry and Art, and learn how to create your own Artwork with the help of Mathematics. Participants will learn basic Watercolours Painting techniques from Print Designer and Artist Cheryl T, and understand how Geometry plays an important role in creating aesthetically-pleasing Artworks. A therapeutic Art Workshop that highlights the intricate relationship between the Arts and the Science.

ASF15: Ice Cream making

Welcome to the Art and Science of the Scoop! Have you ever wondered how ice cream is made? Have you explored the delicious history of ice cream, and who invented it? What was the first flavour of ice cream? Today, the flavour are endless. But flavour is not this frozen dessert’s only attraction. Texture provides most of the sensual appeal of ice cream: firm on the spoon yet creamy in the mouth as it melts. In this workshop, you will learn about the chemistry of ice cream making and YES, make your OWN ice cream! You can rope in the whole family to join in the fun, just make sure you prepare sufficient amount of ice.

ASF16: Boba Making

Ever wonder how the boba pearls in your favourite bubble tea is made? Now it’s the opportunity to learn the science behind it. What are the ingredients you need to create the boba pearls that is somewhere between jelly and chewing gum? What explains the chewy texture? What kind of cooking process is required that transform the starchy balls to chewy pearls? Join us to get a hands-on experience to make your own boba pearls at home!

ASF17: The Secret of Pepper’s Ghost Illusion

Don't be afraid! There is no ghost in the workshop! The Pepper's Ghost Illusion, named after a British scientist, John Henry Pepper, is widely used in theatres and amusement parks nowadays. In this workshop, you will learn about the science and history behind this effect, and you will learn how to create your very own illusion!

ASF18: Edible Cutlery Workshop - Creating a sustainable future through Design Thinking

This workshop explores sustainable product design, focusing on edible cutlery as an innovative solution to plastic waste. Participants will learn about the benefits of edible cutlery, the design process, challenges, and case studies of successful companies. By the end, they will understand sustainable product design, gain knowledge on plastic waste challenges and solutions.

ASF19: Befriending Your Inner Critic

Is that voice in your head shaming you, putting you down or harping non-stop at a mistake you made? Let's befriend our inner critics and uncover their origins and what they are actually trying to tell us. In this interactive workshop, you will explore what recent discoveries in neuroscience tell us about our inner critics. You also get to use art to transform your relationship with your inner critic so you can develop ways to respond to the inner critic that helps you truly grow.

ASF20: The science and art behind baking

Why does the recipe call for cake flour instead of plain flour? What is the difference between baking powder and baking soda? Can I substitute X with Y? Why is my cake dry? How do I make my baked goods Insta-worthy? Find your answers in science and design! In baking, every ingredient has a purpose. If you follow all the instructions precisely, your end product is always the same. That’s what science is about, accuracy in its methods and results that can be reproduced consistently. As an artist, the baker uses scientific knowledge of the chemistry of baking to create unique yet familiar dishes. They use flavor, texture, and visual appeal to produce an edible art piece, and decorate cakes and confections that help people celebrate the great moments of life. We will be making a fudgy brownie from scratch that is yummy for the tummy and pretty for the camera!

ASF21: The World of Coffee

Enter the world of Speciality Coffee! In this workshop, we kick off by brewing a deceivingly simple cuppa. While caffeinated, we explore the economics and geographies related to coffee and their origins, before delving into the arcane and scientific processes behind perfecting the flavours in your cup. We culminate in a group brewing session via the V60 pour over method, and experience first hand the art and science involved in creating a delicious cuppa and why flavours differ so much from cup to cup.

  3. In this learning community, we respect learning and collaboration. As with any virtual classroom, let’s follow our online classroom etiquette to make our learning environment a safe and inclusive one.

    • Find a clean, quiet space and dress appropriately.

    • Make sure your class and full name show up appropriately. STEAMinars are exclusively for ASR members and we don’t need random strangers to be there!

    • For the same reason, turn your camera on. Your facilitators also need to be able to guide you virtually during the hands-on activities.

    • Be aware of your background, lighting, and noise.

    • Mute until you are required to talk.

    • Be on time for the STEAMinar. We wouldn’t want to miss any minute of the fun.

    • Pay attention and maintain eye contact with the facilitators on the screen. It really encourages the facilitators and closes our distance virtually.

    • Be prepared to take notes (on your computer or in a notebook) or to access workshop material on Google Drive.

    • You may use the chat room (if available) to ask your questions or clarify doubts.
